Raffles Hotel & Singapore Sling...

Singapore was the penultimate stop on our Asian trip. Lying at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, Singapore proved to be one of the most interesting places we have visited.

It is interesting that Singapore was initially leased from the Sultanate of Johor by the British East India Company, and later in 1826 bought by Great Britain. Currently Singapore, after Japan, is the most developed Asian state.

One of the most interesting attractions of Singapore is Raffles Hotel. Opened in 1887, it remains one of the few still operating great nineteenth century colonial hotels. While the hotel is necessary to try the famous drink Singapore Sling. This sweet cocktail on the basis of gin and cherry brandy is served in The Long Bar, one of the oldest hotel bars. Friendly service, live music and informal atmosphere made the visit in Raffles one of those experiences that we will certainly remember for a very long time.

Multicultural melting pot ...

Singapore is very diverse country, both ethnically and culturally.

The city is divided into 55 districts, most of which has its own unique character. Among modern skyscrapers you can easily find churches, mosques, Hindu temples and Taoist gardens. We were very impressed by Sri Veeramakaliamman Hindu temple, located in the centre of Little India. Built in 1881, still works for the good of the local community, amongst others, as a place serving food to the poor.

At local markets and small restaurants, regardless of time of day or night, live is teeming with tourists and locals. On early mornings, instead of breakfast in the hotel we chose to try local diners, guided by their local popularity. For Europeans, the local cuisine may seem strange, and a selection of dishes difficult. The locals, however, are very friendly and always happy to advise the best dish. Thanks to this, and our courage, we could try for example traditional Indian breakfast served on a banana leaf.
